March update

Just a quick update to keep this blog alive and kicking. Seems like I still get hits when I don’t post for weeks! :D What prompted me to squeeze in a short blog post in between my homework was a nice comment I received about this blog from a friend of mine…who I had no idea would come here :P He reminded me of the old times, when I had the Durarara!! inspired chatroom on this blog. Good times…

Life’s been alright, but who cares anyway? Anime, music and tech is way more important. In fact, they are what make it worthwhile to live on earth. It’ll be hard to find anything more exciting than constantly refreshing Engadget during MWC, crying and laughing with the anime characters you hold dear, and listening to some nice beats.

I’ve been watching anime, and I can now comfortably say that Madoka is the best anime this season for me. I absolutely adore the blend of cuteness and grim themes! Other ones I’m loving are Fractale, Kore wa Zombie and Gosick :) Still on the topic of anime, my Azusa figure should be arriving soonish! Will have to blog about that when that happens. In regard to movies, I’ve recently seen Black Swan which was amazing (you’ve probably heard enough about it). This week I’m planning on seeing Rango! Might post a review of that.

How about tech? Well, I guess all I have to say is the iPad 2 was disappointing. Despite the underwhelming specs, it’s still going to sell well. Apple plays the market well; they know they have a solid product, which thrives on ‘Developers, developers, developers!’. With the amount of apps, existing customer base and the influence their brand name has on the general consumer base they really didn’t need to release a spec-beast to keep selling. Well played; they didn’t need to spend more money manufacturing a ‘better’ device. That being said, they still haven’t got my  money. (and thousands of others who weren’t keen on the original).

However, recently I did have an epiphany. My internet line was dead for a few days, which resulted in resorting to tethering, but in that time I was aware that I spent a significant amount of time off the computer. My computer usage was more than halved. Maybe about 20% of usual, just because of the internet. Oh dear.

Two more weeks is not enough! >.<’

Well into the latter half of the summer holidays here in Australia, and I’m not keen for school starting at all! Friends and cousins of mine who are at uni (and enjoying their longer summer break) tell me to cherish these high school days and enjoy them as much as I can… They say university work is so much harder. While I don’t doubt that in the slightest, at least they (mostly) get to study subjects they enjoy. I just hope highschool flies by quickly and then I can enjoy the social life of university that I’m so envious of at the moment.

First up, stuff about anime and such (get the stuff readers want covered before I go on a rant). I will not be providing episode by episode coverage on this new season unlike my attempt last season. However, I will provide comments within each blog post.

Here’s my remixed song I forgot to embed last time:

So far in this season’s anime offering, I have watched Gosick, Level E, Freezing, Beelzebub, Infinite Stratos and Kore wa Zombie desu ka. Once I finish the last 5 episodes of Samurai Champloo I’ll check out some of the others (Fractale, Puella Magi Madoka Magica). By the way, Samurai Champloo is badass; epic fights, interesting characters, quality production and lots of fantastic laughs. Out of the 6 new anime I have started, my favourite is definitely Level E. It has the humour and a fairly good sci-fi set up, and even potential light romance. It’s absurdity has a slight tinge of Arakawa in it, which is definitely a plus. My close second favourite is Gosick, simply because it looks to be a decent mystery series, and I’m loving the adorable costumes! Next up would be Beelzebub and Kore wa Zombie… tied. They both are action shounen series, both filled to the brim with craziness, but stylistically different. I’m hoping Infinite Stratos turns out well, as I’m quite a big fan of mecha series. So far, I’m having a hard time seeing the ‘mecha’ aspect behind all the clichéd harem. Freezing, an ecchi action flick with female warriors (akin to Claymore) almost had me turn it off and drop it completely due to its dull nature and 4:3 aspect ratio, but the ending gave a glimmer of interest. Nothing special, and not some super ecchi; but a wimpy boy causing trouble…once again akin to Claymore. So basically, this season is a fair bit better than I expected.

As you might have gathered, I love all sorts of genres: from typical boy stuff to the cheesiest romance. On a somewhat related note, I watched Disney’s Tangled today, and absolutely loved it. I’ll rate it 8.5/10, with marks taken off for some plot weaknesses/lack of smoothness and the fact that it doesn’t do anything new. It takes a classic fairytale and does a top-notch adaptation for modern audiences. Recently I also saw the renowned The King’s Speech, which is one of the highest quality films I’ve seen. It does basically everything well; 9.5/10. I’m not giving it a ten, but depending on my reaction when I see it again, I just might. What makes me say that is it’s not one of my personal favourites…Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction are examples of tens from me.

It seems I have already hit 500 words, so now I’ll move on to my holidays which I know you are keen to hear about. Since last post, I’ve attended a failed Lord of the Rings movie marathon (people lost patience and decided to watch Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy instead), moved to a smaller room and worked a total of one shift. I really hope that job hunt reaps some results soon!

As you can see, this is my new room. Getting the bed to fit right into that spot there was quite a hassle. We measured it and thought ‘hey, this will fit perfectly!’. But deep down in my pessimistic soul, I know things always sound too good to be true. Turns out, the bed was approximately 2 centimetres too long which logically followed with my dad saying: ‘let’s cut off the bevel from the wall!’. Using my exceptional Year 9 and 10 industrial technology skills, I quickly advised him to cut the leg of the beg to form a sort of support ‘joint’ with the wall bevel (see bottom left of photo). After a bit of time and a bit more sweat and blood, I’m happy to say that it turned out quite well! XD

Holidays: quick update…

Hello world! It’s been quite awhile since I’ve done anything on this site. Haven’t kept up to date with all that anime, and the Fall 2010 season is already over (for the 13 ep series such as Arakawa and Oreimo). Bakuman is still going after passing its halfway mark, and steadily improving on its [frankly] tedious start. It even has a second season announced which is great news for fans of the manga! The World God Only Knows also announced a much needed second season, after finishing disappointingly with a filler episode (a good one, but bad placement. Would’ve preferred some more plot to finish the season).

Christmas and the school holidays have really killed the blogging spirit. After several weeks of intense yearly tests, all a student really wants to do is lie on a couch, watch anime (without thinking about what to blog about it!), go out with friends and party. For these few weeks, between sleep and part time work, I can easily say this is so far one of the most packed holidays I’ve had…as long as I can remember. Partly thanks to my parents loosening the leash, and improved organization skills :D So far there’s been fireworks watching, family gatherings, movie marathons, anime marathons, city trips, restaurants, fishing, poker, and a bit of collab work with Roger. Not bad so far, but more parties are definitely needed XD and homework too.

Just recently discovered DJ Max Technika! Such a newbie at these fun rhythm arcade games!

Plans for the rest of the holiday include The Kings Speech, Tangled, Green Hornet, city trips (need moar DDR and DJ Max arcade! ^_^), several more marathons, getting a grip on my solo electronic music project, maybe changing my bedroom to a different room of the house (smaller, but narrow shape allows for something new?) and hopefully kicking off more collab projects I’ve talked about with some friends! Got some exciting ideas that I really hope come to fruition. Might start writing film reviews again if I get bored of all the games I bought from the massive Steam sale! One 700 word film review will be much easier to write than weekly anime coverage!

Will need to work more shifts/get a second job if I want to have a even better holiday next year overseas though T__T Going job hunting at restaurants with a mate next week.

Rented FFXIII recently, didn’t play much due to my nit-picking on the English VOs (which are actually mostly good). Will have to import the Chinese copy with English subtitles and Japanese voices!

Apparently they are coming to Sydney soon. Haven’t really listened to them much :S

I wish SNSD would come instead :P Might have something to do with them being female

Need to sleep, shower and get up again within the next few hours…getting a haircut and seeing the hyped The Kings Speech tomorrow with family, so I’ll update this with a YouTube embed of my remixed song soon! おやすみ!

This morning, after making sure my physics assignment was decent enough, I just remembered my music practical assessment is tomorrow…so right now I am making the complex decision; should I play Liszt, or should I play some Ensiferum? Guitar or piano? In an attempt to give my brain some peace through this ever-so-important decision, I come to make a blog post, as I have not done so in a considerable amount of time.

Recently, 20+ of our group went to Sydney for Yumcha lunch and the such. Something like four of our friends had birthdays pretty much consecutively, so we decided to kill four birds with one stone. Being Asians, Roger (gochisou), myself and a few others were totally accustomed to yumcha and the goodness it brings. Along with the strangeness. You know what I’m talking about right? The faces the white kids make when they see chicken feet or tripe. Priceless. In fact, some told me that they were further put off chicken feet by my vivid description of the process in which to eat it. Apparently people get put off by dislocating joints inside their mouths…

Anyway, after that enjoyable new-for-many-of-the-white-friends experience (and hefty bill racked up for us 16/17 year olds) we headed on to the usual destination: Morning Glory. Always a fun experience looking at all those cute little Asian thingies, large pandas, Totoro’s, etc. :)

Then came the Lindt cafe at Darling Harbour, where I was treated to a Ice Chocolate (I still feel the need to pay back :P ). Needless to say, it was beautiful and intensely sweet. But not too sweet. I’m one of those guys that doesn’t like sweets that are too sweet, but this was about right for a $6.50 beverage. *thumbs up*

Just recently, I saw a Facebook ad. Thrilling isn’t it? But indeed it is…it seems Facebook ads are well targeted; it might just be me, but I get a lot of ads which I actually click and find extremely interesting! Some things I never would have known about come to my knowledge through Facebook ads! This time it was for a music festival, which has a bit of metal. It’s called No Sleep Til [enter city here], so for me it would be No Sleep Til Sydney.

Now, heading onto, I have 8 recommended artists in the line-up, which is pretty good. Out of these, I’m pretty sure I’d enjoy Megadeth, Katatonia, Dropkick Murphys and 3 inches of Blood. However, at $140…it’s gonna be hard for me to justify that. I mean, Screamfest was more…but Ensiferum and Edguy? Definitely worth it. Speaking of Screamfest, any of you hear anything about it coming back again? After all, JustSayRock seem to have some troubles (dropping the Turisas tour at a very late notice, which was fortunately picked up by Soundwave I believe). If anyone out there knows something, I’d love to know. Screamfest 2010 was just too beautiful for my livemetalvirgin ears.

Also, if you haven’t heard……………..

Writing an assessment on stalkers was a good idea after all…

One set of school stress is over…and I am rather glad. I celebrated with Scott Pilgrim VS The World (which was rather good as long as you understand the geeky references) and a nice steak lunch. Now, I shall relax for a bit more with some nice Pop and tea…

I lied.

There’s actually.

Tests on.

Moving on from an exaggerated complaint about tests from a subject which I am considering dropping, to………
